LinkedIn vs. JibberJobber (or, LinkedIn AND JibberJobber)
LinkedIn vs. JibberJobber (or, LinkedIn AND JibberJobber) This week I was on a call with JibberJobber user Cary who said that when he recommends JibberJobber to his colleagues, they say Im already on LinkedIn, so I dont need that. Ive written about this before: JibberJobber + LinkedIn in 2013 and JibberJobber vs. LinkedIn in 2009. In Joshua Waldmans best selling book Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies, he recommends JibberJobber as a tool to organize your job search via social media (reference). He does not include LinkedIn as a tool to organize your job search. Why? Because LinkedIn is not a tool to organize your job search. LinkedIn is not a CRM. LinkedIn is barely a roladex replacement. Let me jump into an analogy. Lets say that you are going build a house (which, for some people, feels as complex as managing a job search). What single tool is the most important tool to use to build a house? Is the hammer more important than the saw? Is the plumb bob more important than the level? Is the heavy machinery (caterpillar tractors) more important than the drill, more important than the measuring tape, more important than the wet/dry vacuum, more important than the nail gun? To think of building a house with one tool is crazy. Its probably impossible. Thats the difference between JibberJobber and LinkedIn. They are both tools, and they each have different purposes. I use LinkedIn to find and research prospects. What do they say about themselves? Where did they go to school and work? What are their specialties? Where do they live? Should I get on the phone with them? I use JibberJobber to keep track of my relationships with people. Not what necessarily what jobs they have had over the last 10 years, although you could easily track that. Im talking about keeping track of where Im at with a person. Have we talked? About what? What number did I call them at? Was I supposed to follow-up? About what, and when? Who introduced me to that person? How strong is my relationship with that person? Did I talk with them, and others, at the same time (like in a panel interview)? Of course, LinkedIn does other things, like allows me to communicate with people who supposedly have something in common (with LinkedIn Groups), and share my brand statements through Articles and status updates. And, of course, JibberJobber does other things, like helps me track which jobs Ive applied to, which versions of which resumes I used, when I sent them, to whom, and whether Ive interviewed at any jobs and when I should follow-up. Can you see the difference between these tools? One is a hammer, which is very, very useful for certain jobs, and the other is a power drill, which is very, very useful for other jobs. Apples to oranges. Or, as Cary said, chalk and cheese (a delightful British phrase). Would you ever need to use JibberJobber, if you are using LinkedIn? The question is, really, is it okay to use the right tools for different jobs? I think its a pretty obvious yes. If you think about it, using multiple tools to build a house is the only way to get the job done. Now, figure out how to actually get value out of LinkedIn (more than just being on it), and combine that with the power of the organizing and tracking features in JibberJobber. Your job search will change. Make Your Life More Random
Make Your Life More Random The Chinese character for happy accident (Courtesy: about.com) Here is my new mantra for 2013: Expect nothing. Welcome everything. I took this from an excellent post by Leo Babauta. Hereâs why itâs so powerful for me. I believe that most of the pain we experience as humans fits into the gap between what we think should happen and what actually happens. Weâre poisoned by expectations, comparison, and envy. I want to stop expecting. Stop creating internal timelines that only I am aware of. Stop holding everyone â" including me â" to an impossible standard of success, of performance, of behavior. I want to let the world unfold in its own time. I worry that I am missing out on some wonderful experiences because I am overscheduled. The brilliant Lissa Rankin calls this mindset being too âspermyâ (motile, struggling, always pushing, always seeking.) The opposite, being open and receptive, she calls âeggy.â Here are her signs you are pushing too hard: Your work drains you, rather than fulfilling you. You feel like youâre pushing uphill and nothing flows. When you do succeed, you feel like you worked your ass off to make it happen. You fail to savor your successes along the way, focusing instead on what you have yet to achieve. Youâre more motivated by pleasing other people than by pleasing yourself. Youâve lost faith in magic. Your life is fun-deficient. Youâre over-scheduled but underpaid. Doors keep getting closed in your face. You never smack your âThat Was Easyâ button. Ever. Sound familiar? The second part of the mantra is âWelcome everything.â Be open. Be ready. Accept what is and ponder it before wishing or pushing it away. Randomize your life. We tend to get stuck in patterns of behavior that limit our experience to what we know, what weâve done, and what we expect. Whatâs comfortable for us is what is familiar to us. This year, Iâm going to make sure I have more random experiences. Here are a couple of things I plan to try. As a matter of fact, Iâll start now: when I typed the previous sentence, I accidentally typed: âHere are a couple of thinks I plan to try.â I refuse to believe that it was a typo. So here are my new thinks for 2013: Never sit next to someone I know at an event (thank you, Marilyn Feldstein, for teaching me this.) Randomize who I connect with. At your next event, I plan to start up a conversation with everyone whoâs wearing red. Or any criterion of my in the moment choice. But Ill make the choice random and see what happens. Give away more than I acquire. I want to make room, both physically and spiritually, for more of what I want in my life. To do that, I need to create space. If it doesnât wildly excite me, move me to tears, or serve a higher good in my life, it goes. Be wide open. I will treat new people I meet as though we are already friends. I will go deeper, faster â" cut to the essence of what I think and want to share. What are the new thinks youâre willing to try?

Beginner Guide Web Design vs. Web Development - Algrim.co
Beginner Guide Web Design vs. Web Development - Algrim.co It is hard to keep track the way technology is evolving, and it is even harder to keep up with all the terms popping up in relation to technology. One such case is that of Web Design and Web Development. With the substantial rise of the Internet, we find companies using the terms âweb designâ and âweb developmentâ extensively while even sometimes substituting one for the other. However, no matter how fine, but there is a line that exists and separates these two fields which themselves have a significant presence of their own, i.e. clouded by the alternating use in the context of the Internet. So, how does web design differs from web development? Well, to simply state, web design is the design, or say, the visual aspect of the web. It focuses on how a particular web element looks or is represented to the users. A user only cares about content or information that is in an acknowledgeable form. There is a specific way to present content on the Internet so that it gets understood by the users. And this is the forte of web design. Web design is the thing that stands between a well-defined content and content that misses the point. Alternatively, Web Development is about the functioning aspect of the web. It is the work that goes behind the scene to liven up the visual elements of the Internet (specifically, websites and web pages) to make the domain of World Wide Web appealing to people. You can say, web development is the thing that makes the Internet work. Without web development, everything on the Internet would be static and worthless. Now enough with the introduction. Letâs get a magnifying glass and look closer at both ends of the comparison. Web Design Upon breaking the term Web Design, we get two terms â" Web and Design. Web refers to the Internet (i.e. network within a network) or World Wide Web. Design implies outline, shape or visual aspect of any element. So, web design infers the way any web element appears on the web. There is no coding wizardry involved. Web Design is also known as front-end or client-side design. Front-end in the sense that it is the face. The part of the website or webpage that the user directly sees and interacts with at any point in time. It does the job of engaging the user to the content. Web design is a vast discipline and further branches to specializations like web graphic design, interface design, UX design, and SEO. Logos, icons and illustrations are things that come under graphic design. Interface and UX design deal with some visual element; however, it is more about the presentation. UX/UI design controls how an end-user perceives and interacts with the content. The total concentration of the web design is upon the end-experience of a user with the content. So, there are some pointers to take into consideration associated with the design of web elements. For the sake of simplicity, there are two aspects of web design â" Appearance and Layout. Letâs start with appearance. So, what about appearance? Appearance suggests how an element feels in a visual sense. It is about the identity of the entity itself. In the real world, appearance is the first thing anyone notices about an object. So is the case in the virtual world, in fact, the degree of reliance based on the appearance of objects is even higher. Hence, web designers have to take a lot of care while designing web elements. The appearance of an element is one thing and how it visualizes concerning its surroundings is other. What design aspect Iâm talking about is the layout. A layout tells about information structure and categorization. It talks about the relation between placements of various elements within a particular space. Even good content will struggle to make an impact if it is a part of a bad layout. A good layout is key having harmony between elements in a space. Critical aspects of good design: In addition to being eye-pleasing, good web design needs to keep check of some other points. The following are some of the critical aspects of good web design: Focus on objective Web designs are purely based on achieving an intended target. Be it in the form of capturing leads, engagement of users to content, web designs should let users understand the intent of the web content and on top of that be able to help achieve that content target. A good design is visually pleasing and content-centric. Hence, there should be any extra information or feature that cause a distraction and make the user go astray. Design should be such that the userâs focus is only directed towards the content. Awareness of usability As discussed earlier, a good design should project focus on content other than anything else. However, in pursuit of this goal, there is a risk of compromising usability. Imagine going through a companyâs website where you unable to find their contact or services page. That would not exactly be appealing, would it? Presenting content on the web is one end of the design balance. Along with the presentation, there is the weight of content navigation on the other end of the balance. A good design should make accessing information and resources easy for the user. There are numerous ways in which a good design takes care of these two aspects. Responsive and Adaptive design. As of June 2018, more than 50% of the world population has access to the Internet. This percentage is ever growing with the internet being increasingly accessed from various devices ranging from mobiles phones, tablets to laptops and desktops. Hence, any web design created in this day must be able to conform to the different screen sizes of devices. There are two types of design which help web contents in this â" responsive design and adaptive design. Responsive design allows for dynamic movement of content while the adaptive design has web content fixed in the layout corresponding to some common screen sizes. Marketing and communication design. This design aspect helps in the aesthetics of overall design of a site so that there is no contradiction to clarity and accuracy of content i.e., it helps keep the focus on the objective. A marketing and communication design might be about promoting a product or service that new to the market. UX design and interactive design. UX/UI design looks after the usability aspect of the web design. This design aspect aims for the design of content structure based on how a user thinks a website should work. Based on user perception of how a site works, UX/UI design process aims to create a user interactive web design. All web designs go around elements like layouts, instructions, and labeling on website, typography, motion graphics and generated content (static and dynamic websites). The list of factors could be endless. But one thing is for sure; web designs are what make the world of the Internet exciting for the users. Web Development Letâs simplify web development. Web and development. Web, as you know, is the Internet or network with a network. Development is the progression. Together, web development means the progress of the Internet. Progress in this context indicates to web function; how a web element works. Be it you clicking on the news feed to get updates on Facebook, or selecting the âUploadâ button on Instagram to share your latest birthday pictures, every web function is a result of web development. Without web development, web design is obsolete. Web development is what enables you to get likes on Facebook and Instagram. Web development deals with all the functionality aspect of the web (or say web design). While web design interacts with the user, thousands of codes and scripts contribute to put life into web design and make them interactive. Web development is underrated in the sense that a lot of work that goes into web development stays behind the curtains. It hides behind the visual aspect of the web. Upon classifying, there are three types of web development â" front-end, back-end, and full-stack development. In developer terms, a front-end developer works on the code that is responsible for enabling functionality to web content that the user/clients view on their browsers. He/she takes assurance of the hands-on experience of the website. A back-end developer, however, looks after the inner workings, the behind-the-scenes mechanics of the site. Unlike a front-end developer who works on features like button functions, a back-end developer writes codes for things like collecting data. A full-stack developer has their work cut out in the sense that they have to design a whole self-sustaining web platform based on smaller software subsystems. Letâs go a bit in-depth. Client-side scripting or front-end development. This aspect of web development directly handles the visual aspects of web contents, i.e., it helps build the look and feel of a website. This scripting puts functionalities into the button, menus, and other browsing and navigating aspects of a site, which directly interact with the client/user. It is more straightforward from the two development types as it only involves enabling functions to the design elements of a webpage or website. Program languages like HTML, CSS, Javascript help in front-end development. Server-side scripting or back-end development. Back-end in the sense that anything that happens stays in the background, hidden from the user. Back-end codes are the elements that help a website run properly on limited storage of the web browser. When someone accesses a website, he/she does not receive the whole site as a package on to their computer. Instead, the website resides in a server, and a part of it is sent to the userâs computer to access. Server-side scripting helps create a framework that allows for hosting of files and images of a website to work on a server which is accessible on user request. Programming languages like C, Java, PHP aid in back-end development. Database technology is the system that lets a website run smoothly over a web server. A site needs a database to store codes, images, files, and other data. In short, a database contains all the components for full-functioning of a website. Databases are content banks that store content and information and allow access to these resources when there is a data request. One can create databases of sites with the help of programming languages likes Oracle, Apache, Microsoft SQL server and MongoDB. The advantage of ground up web design and development is that one can build their web content based on their custom requirements and features. For a unique and interactive user-experience, the Internet needs the help of both web design and web development, as both of these aspects of web engineering are different. So remember, web design and web development are two ends of a discussion and play a significant part in how we perceive and utilize the Internet.

Confident Career Strategies
Confident Career Strategies Tanya Stewart Tanya Stewart is a seasoned recruiter and interviewer who has coached thousands of job seekers on how to effectively and confidently interview and get job offers. Her clients range from executive management to administrative assistants and everyone in between: attorneys, project managers, sales people, bankers, retail staff, customer service professionals, those with IT backgrounds, healthcare professionals, and many more. She recently spoke to the CareerSource NEFL Professional Network on how to prepare for a confident interview. Stewart says that the first step in preparing for an interview is to conduct a thorough inventory of your skills and accomplishments. A sort of personal SWOT analysis: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses in a competitive market can help you prepare to answer tough questions in the interview. These are internal qualities, whereas Opportunities and Threats are environmental qualities. What outside factors might influence the market for your skills? Is your programming language of choice being phased out? Are you an early adopter of some technique or technology? Being aware of industry trends helps you position yourself within a larger context. Next, Stewart says, you must learn to craft a compelling narrative about your core competencies. âWhat are you selling?â she asks. âHow can you differentiate yourself from the other people in your industry who have done the same kind of work?â Learning to build stories into your interview preparation helps you add proof of your past success to your answers. Strong preparation helps you remain cool under pressure in an interview. Youâll have the best of both worlds: a strong narrative you can advance, and poise that comes from knowing you can answer questions on the fly. Great improvisation or âimprovâ actors are skilled at staying in the moment and staying true to their character. In contrast to the process of memorizing scripts and delivering lines, improv frees you of self-consciousness and helps you get into a creative frame of mind. Youâre free to experiment with your story, since your character and basic premise for the scene are established. Tanya Stewart describes an interview like a first date: you have to be able to read signals from your interviewer, but the experience should also be reciprocal. You want to make a good impression, and at the same time, determine whether you want to take this relationship further. Does the company or the position merit a second date? Stewart helps her clients read people and communicate better through a personality assessment developed by author Helen Fisher, who writes books about dating and relationships. Fisher has developed profiles of four distinct personality types: the Explorer, the Builder, the Director, and the Negotiator. Explorers are adventurous, passionate and energetic. Builders are conventional, cautious and good at following rules. Directors are analytical, tough minded, direct and decisive, while Negotiators are imaginative, intuitive, compassionate and socially skilled. Knowing your type, and perhaps more importantly, knowing how to communicate with the other types, can make all the difference in how confident you feel and appear in your interview. For more information on Helen Fisherâs personality types and to take her quiz, visit this site: http://socionist.blogspot.com/2009/04/helen-fishers-types-explorer-builder.html For information on Tanya Stewartâs coaching, visit: www.amoreconfidentyou.com
